HELP & FAQ

Science

Science
What is human psychophysiology?
Psychophysiology is the study of the interrelationships between mind and body which is a science concerned with the psychological bases of physiological processes. This involves measurement of a variety of different physiological parameters in response to a range of different emotional, visual and auditory stimuli.
How can this affect my mental health and performance?
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act.
In real life mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her team by making healthy decisions.
Poor mental health and stress can negatively affect Your:
  • Job performance and productivity.
  • Engagement with Your work.
  • Communication with coworkers.
  • Physical capability and daily functioning.
CleverPoint Marine promotes the importance of mental health and stress management, with assessment and training programs which combine cognitive and mental well-being solutions.
How can CP Marine measure an individual's psychophysiological parameters?
  1. Assessing cognitive abilities with a series of VR exercises that assess different fundamental cognitive skills: attention and concentration, perception, executive functions and coordination.
  2. Measuring brain activity using electroencephalogram (EEG) with built in EMG sensors (electrodes) inside the facial interface of the VR headset. EEG measures frontal lobe activity which is the part of the brain that controls important cognitive skills in humans, such as emotional expression, problem solving, memory, language, judgment, and sexual behaviors.
  3. Evaluating stress, workload, psycho emotional resilience and recovery as well as other parameters of the nervous system using electrocardiogram (ECG) and Heart rate variability (HRV) measure.
What are the benefits for me as a maritime professional?
There is a number of benefits You can receive with the use of CleverPoint Marine technologies:
  • Understanding the causal relationship between physiology and your performance
  • Personalized wellbeing and self-development activities
  • Improving cognitive abilities, stress tolerance, mental health and overall work-life balance.
  • First steps to achieve a “growth mindset”, which can improve both individual and team qualities and productivity.

Virtual Reality

What is Virtual Reality (VR)?
Virtual Reality is a computer-generated simulation that allows people to interact and be transported to new places within a three-dimensional environment. When you put on the VR headset, you can look all around you and see and hear a virtual world nearly identical to real life. Mentally and emotionally, you feel like you are in that situation.
Why use VR in the assessment and training process?
VR is uniquely equipped to offer a more effective and sustainable educational and training experience because it engages all four learning centers of the brain, providing training that is more experiential than purely cognitive — particularly useful for learning new skills and further improving existing abilities.

Neuroscientists have taken tremendous interest in exploring VR, because of how immersive technology acts on the brain while creating a safe space. There are several scientific principles that VR is able to maximize, unlike any other forms of immersion like role play and 2D simulations:

  • VR experiences create a full-body experience that increases user engagement.
  • Interactions in the virtual environment mimic the physical world to activate the same neural pathways in the brain.
  • Use it as many times as you want or need, depending on the use case.
  • In VR, users make decisions in the virtual environment just like they would in the real world, and those decisions have a direct impact on the experience.
  • The VR experience invokes a sense of presence that creates realistic emotional responses.
Are there any safety risks?
There are a few precautions that should be taken while using a VR headset with the CleverPoint Marine technology.
  • It is not recommended for persons under the age of 18
  • VR goggles create interactive virtual reality that distracts you from your actual surroundings, so for the safety of "being in virtual reality", the instructor's directions must be followed.
  • VR technologies should not be used by individuals while intoxicated, during a hangover and if you suffer from cold, headaches, inflammatory eye diseases and seizures.
  • In some cases, it may be advisable to consult with a doctor prior to using a VR headset, which could interfere with certain medical devices (e.g. pacemaker, hearing device).
  • Do not use it if the VR headset is hot or uncomfortably warm.
  • In some cases individuals may experience sensations such as nausea, dizziness, imbalance, discomfort in the eye area, and others associated with motion sickness. Tell the instructor about any unpleasant sensations if they arise.
  • Do not operate a car, operate machinery, or engage in any other visual or physical activity that has the potential to have serious consequences, or activities that require an unimpaired sense of balance and hand-eye coordination until you fully recover from the effects of any side effects.
Can people wear glasses in the VR headset?
Yes, the headset allows for more space to fit your glasses and has straps that can be adjusted to fit your head comfortably. Recommended glasses that are 142mm or less wide and 50mm or less high. Anything more than that will likely have trouble fitting in the most VR headsets on the market.

Do I need to buy a VR headset separately to use the CleverPoint Marine program?
No! To use our software and simulations we offer a pre-packaged, all-inclusive headset and laptop, pre-loaded with software programs and applications required for the psycho-physiological assessment and other training programs of Your choosing.
Is VR mandatory for self-development?
No! CleverPoint Marine technology identifies an individual's personal strengths and areas of improvement, and gives the person specific self-development recommendations.

These recommendations can be further used to train in our specifically developed VR simulations and training platform or by any other technique available, which would best suit person's own condition and circumstances.
